Lewiston gains new grocery delivery service
May 14, 2010
Semcac Senior Nutrition is trying a new service in one rural community based on a project prepared by Kwai Sheung Cheung, the program's most recent dietetic intern from Viterbo University. Lewiston was chosen as the initial community for a trial grocery delivery service due to the recent loss of the community's only full service grocery store. Several communities in Southeast Minnesota have lost local grocery stores due to the economic recession, and as a result, some seniors have been left with few options for obtaining groceries.
The Senior Nutrition Program has first focused on offering this new service for its Meals on Wheels recipients in the Lewiston area. However, other senior citizens with hardships, such as lack of transportation or other mobility concerns, may be eligible. The service relies on volunteers to pick up and deliver the groceries, and more help is needed. For more information on accessing this service or becoming a volunteer, call Senior Nutrition's Lewiston Site Manager, Cindy Burt, at 507-523-3412.
